When learning how to cast a spinning reel it is most important that you practice. Practicing will help you master it fast. You don’t even need to practice on the water. You can easily practice right in the backyard. Just make sure you don’t get snagged on any trees, so a wide open space is best.

To start your cast you first need to let out about 10” of line. Sometimes you let out less but I’ll cover that later. Next you need to hold onto the line right in front of the reel with your dominant index finger. Make sure that the reel is underneath the rod. Then you want to open the bail so that the reel will let the line out freely. Look exactly where you want the lure to land and make sure when you’re done casting your rod tip is pointing there. Next you want to carefully raise the rod tip over and behind your head. Be sure there are no people or trees directly behind you. Then fling the rod tip forward and release the line with your index finger. Let the lure fly until it hits the water then close the bail. Again, to ensure you hit your target when casting, make sure the rod tip ends up pointed at your target.

To make short range, precise casting sometimes the side-arm technique is used. It is mostly the same, however instead of raising the rod over your head you bring it to the side. That combined with shortening the length of line you let out before you cast, can help you to make short ranged, more accurate casts. This will allow you to avoid a low hanging tree or other vegetation. It’s easier to cast when you have a good rod as well, some of the best custom fishing rods are Castaway Rods.
