In the summer of 2019 my paternal grandparents decided to take my family and my cousins on a trip to North Carolina for the summer. We rented a giant beach house. You could walk out the back door and be 100 yards from the North Atlantic Ocean! Each night we would do a different activity, except for the first night. That’s when we spent the whole day driving all the way from Illinois. By the time we got there it was 10:00 o’clock at night. But I rode down with my aunt and cousins so we got there a little bit after everyone else.

When we arrived my mom took me down to the beach. We stood on the shore and let the waves hit our feet. It was so cool. The next night we went to a really cool ice cream shop just off the shore of the beach, after a full day of swimming of course. The name of the small island we were staying on was Emerald Isle. And at the ice cream shop they had really cool stickers with the name Emerald Isle on them. After we got ice cream we headed back to the house to go to sleep.

The next night we went to a restaurant called The Black Sheep. I don’t even really remember the food but I do remember the beautiful murals on the walls inside the restaurant. On the wall in front of our table was a giant mural of Frida Kahlo. The next night we went to see a movie at a small theater near the edge of Emerald Isle.

On the last night there we went out on the pier to fish for baby sharks, or dogfish. We met this guy on the pier, I think his name was Michael, he was really helpful. None of us had ever fished in the ocean before so he was a big help. He told us the best bait to use was either shrimp or small squid, luckily since we were so close to the ocean there was no shortage at the local grocery store. We thawed the bait with the sinks at the fish cleaning station then got to work. We each caught a couple of small sharks and it was so much fun! Luckily the nearby surf shop had some saltwater fishing rods for sale, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to go at all!
