Inshore fishing is a common approach to fishing in places near the ocean. Fishing is considered inshore if it is 20 or less meters deep and within about 2 miles from shore. Typically this is when smaller saltwater fish are caught including redfish, flounder, spotted sea trout and tarpon. It is either done from shore or from a boat. You can go on a boat charter trip, which includes a boat and usually a Charter Captain which will guide you. When inshore fishing is not on a boat it can be beneficial to use a pier or a bridge, otherwise it can just be done from shore.
One popular technique when inshore fishing from a boat is called drifting. However, it is more than just cutting the engine and letting the current take you. When you are drifting with a charter captain aboard they sometimes use what’s called a drift sock system to keep the boat heading in the right direction. Another technique is called bottom fishing, which is when you let the anchor down and fish a school of fish hanging out at the bottom in one spot. Because you are fishing large numbers this is commonly done when the fish are caught to eat. Some adventurous fishermen use a technique called bowfishing. This is where you use a specialized bow with arrows that attach to a spool of line to shoot fish from a boat. This is typically done in shallow waters at nighttime. This technique is similar to Flounder gigging, which is also done in shallow waters from a boat where you stab flounder with spears.
No matter which technique you use, inshore fishing is sure to be a good time. But an important aspect to inshore fishing is having the right rod, the best saltwater rods can be found at Castaway Rods check them out today!
