Selecting a spinning bass fishing rod to purchase can be a daunting task when you don’t know what you’re looking for, but in this article I’ll cover what to look for in a spinning bass fishing rod in order to find one that’s right for you. There are usually 4 criteria you want to look for when shopping for a spinning bass fishing rod; Power, Action, Length, and Composition. When shopping for a rod you are going to want to look for the right power level, typically rod sellers will use 4 different levels of power; light, medium, medium-heavy, and heavy. A heavier rod would be used for heavier lures and heavier line. However, if you use too big a lure on too light a rod you can snap it.

Another important criteria to look for is Action, the action of a rod is usually split into 4 categories; fast, medium, moderate, or slow. The faster the action the more distal the bend. For example a fast action rod would bend towards the tip making it more sensitive and easier to detect a bite, but also more susceptible to breaks.

The last criteria we will look at is the composition of the rod. Rods can be made of fiberglass, graphite, or a composite material. Fiberglass is very sturdy but is also heavy compared to other options. A graphite rod is going to be much lighter and more sensitive, but require more care, considering they’re less tough than a fiberglass rod. A composite rod attempts to combine the two, but a graphite rod is usually favored for longer uses because of its light design, and preferred sensitivity.
